What Is Long-Term Care

Someone with prolonged physical illness, a disability, or a cognitive impairment often needs long-term care.  Long-term care is different from traditional medical care.  Long-term care helps one live as he or she is now.  Long-term care services may include help with activities of daily living, home health care, respite care, hospice care, adult day care, care in a nursing home, and care in an assisted living facility.

How Much Does Long-Term Care Cost?

Based On 2006 National Averages
  • The average daily rate for a private room in a nursing home is $206 or per year $75,190.
  • The average daily rate for a semiprivate room is$183 or $66,795 annually.
  • The average hourly rate for Home Health Aides (HHAs) provided by a home care agency is $19 per hour.

Facts To Consider

  • 1 out of every 2 people 65 and over will need Long-Term Care.
  • For a couple turning 65, there is a 75% chance that one of them will need Long-Term Care.
  • 40% of all people requiring Long-Term Care are between the ages of 18 and 64.
  • 60% of all people who reach age 65 may need Long-Term Care prior to death.
