Underwriting Tips

No company will approve an applicant with any pending surgery no matter how minor it may be.

Speed up the medical records process by calling your client's doctor while they are in your office completing the application and have them fax over a medical authorization form. Your client can sign it while they are there and you can submit this along with the application. Doctors often have their own authorization form they want filled out. If the doctor has to mail their form to the client and then the client has to mail it back. This could take a couple of weeks. A quick call can shave off a week or more when waiting for medical records.

Ask if your client has had any cognitive impairment or memory loss . Get any details you can.

If your applicant has diabetes, find out when they were diagnosed, what medications they take for it, A1C & fasting blood sugar levels, and if there have been any complications. If they are taking insulin, be sure to find out how many units they are taking.

If your applicant has or had cancer, find out the stage, type of cancer, treatment/s, date of onset, date released from care, and if it metastasized.

Ask for a list of all medications your client is taking or has taken in the last five years. Find out the dosage, reason for taking the medication, and date they started taking the medication (and stopped if applicable). Certain medications are uninsurable and if the applicant no longer takes the uninsurable medication, there are often waiting periods.

Find out the general health history of your client. Conditions, stages, and any past surgeries (also date released from care).

Find out if your applicant uses tobacco products (cigarettes, pipe, cigar, or chewing tobacco) or has used tobacco in the past. If they have recently quit, find out when they quit. Most companies will not give preferred rates when you use tobacco. Most companies have a waiting period for cessation before you're considered a non-smoker.
